Betsy DeVos Knows How To Play The Political Game

Betsy DeVos may be a newbie in Washington, but when it comes to winning political fights, she is a seasoned veteran. Betsy is not afraid to get her hands dirty in the political arena, but she rarely does. She has the experience and the power to bring down her political opponents piece by calculated piece. She is a Trump supporter. But when Trump rescinded an Obama policy that gave transgender students the freedom to use school bathrooms that match their gender identity, she knew she was in a situation that needed her undivided attention. She immediately called a meeting with gay and transgender employees at the Education Department, so they knew what was coming. DeVos didn’t like the Trump move, but she didn’t show her disappointment when the news hit the media. Betsy let Trump know he was making a mistake in private, but in true Trumpian style, he didn’t care what she thought.

Betsy is a master politician and the people of Michigan know it. For years, DeVos gave the Republican Party a face and a mission. She and husband Dick, the Amway heir, are a power couple. Dick and Betsy are not afraid to put their money to good use for causes they believe in. Dick’s family may have a higher public profile than Betsy’s family, but make no mistake, the Price family has always been a force to reckon with in the automotive industry. Betsy developed a reputation as a strong competitor and relentless fighter in Michigan, and the state in better shape financially thanks to her determination and her money.

Michigan has more charter schools than any other state thanks, in part, to Betsy DeVos. She believes the public school system doesn’t work anymore. Her Education Department mission is to fix the school system by turning public schools into a charter school type system. Not all the charter schools in her home state are successful, however. There is mud in the water when it comes to the operation, parent participation, and education goals in some Michigan cities. In some cities, the charter school system breaks down because of social and economic issues. When the Michigan state legislature tried to pass a law that would create a system for creating new charter schools and close the under-performing schools with low test scores, she fought the legislation and won. The Great Lakes Education Project actually won that battle. Betsy DeVos is the founder of that organization, according to the New York Times.

Working in the Trump administration is not a long-term endeavor. and Betsy knows that. But she wants to make a difference in America’s school system while she is in Washington. In order to do that, Betsy is in one city after another talking about better education principles. One of those principles is getting parents involved in their children’s education through volunteer work, donations, and most of all, being aware of what their children are learning and doing. Betsy believes America’s public school curriculum is outdated and must change, in order for the United States to remain competitive in the global economic market going forward.
